We at TAH follow strict protocols with stray animals we take in to ensure that their safety and health is put first.
All strays brought to us are immediately scanned for microchips. If the Lost pet is not micro chipped it gets placed on our system under found and we give the finding person the opportunity to decide if they would like to foster the pet until the owner comes forward to claim. If they chose not to take responsibility of the animal they then need to fill in our Reporting of lost animal form. On this form it explains that once the pet has been left in our care that we are solely responsible for the animal and will follow all legal protocols for the animals health and safety until the owners come to collect or comes the time we have to hand over to a welfare organisation. When an animal comes to any of our establishments our number one concern is keeping the animal safe, comfortable and healthy. We give clients who collect their pets the option to microchip.
If the owner does not come to collect their pets we have to follow welfare protocols and hand the animal over to the SPCA for further care. We house about 18 strays a week and unfortunately as we are an animal hospital we do not have the room to keep them for long periods of time.
Please note that we try not taking in "Stray" cats unless they are injured. Cats are wanderers and usually return home on their own.
